Yoseikan Aikido at Hans de Jong Self Defense School

The Aikido taught at Hans de Jong Self Defense School is an older form of Yoseikan, with Sensei Hans' father, the late Shihan Jan de Jong having studied under Sensei Minoru Mochizuki as an uchi deshi (live in student/disciple) in 1969.  Also, Sensei Hans' teacher, the late Yoshiaki Unno, was dispatched from the Yoseikan in 1974, at the request of Shihan Jan de Jong, to teach in Perth.  This means that there are some differences between what is taught at Hans de Jong Self Defense School, compared to what is practiced in schools in Europe and North America.  Specifically, many changes made during the mid seventies, which included the addition of more kata, are not practiced.  This, for example, includes both the Hyori no Kata and Jutsuri no Kata.

The complete syllabus from 6th Kyu to 1st Kyu can be found on the student information page.  From these it can be seen that our system does not contain the kihon (basics) of Karate as such, or the newaza (ground work) of Judo.  Only two kata, not including Happoken or Sambo Geri (the old version of Keri Yon Ho, or Keri Go Ho, which only includes a front, side and back kick), are taught.  These are the Ken Tai Ichi no Kata, and the Tai Sabaki no Kata.  The Ken Tai Ichi no Kata does not include the Tachi Dori (sword taking) movements, and just shows the sword and hand techniques.  The Tai Sabaki no Kata uses different techniques.  The table below outlines the movements and techniques of the Tai Sabaki no Kata as seen in Sensei Mochizuki's book Nihon Den Jujutsu, and as taught here at Hans de Jong Self Defense School.

The sword work taught within the Yoseikan Aikido is also less.  Only the Suwari (sitting) and Tachi (standing) Iai (sword drawing) kata, derived from Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto Ryu by Sensei Mochizuki, are taught.  The kenjutsu kata from Katori are not in the system, neither are the Bo (6ft staff) and other weapon kata.  However, Jo (4ft staff), Tanto (knife), and Tanbo (baton) work is include.
